1991. Glasnost'. Perestroika. The Soviet Union opens its doors to the West. A troupe of young American actors from New York City travels to Kyiv to participate in the first American-Ukrainian joint theatre project in Soviet history, a production based on the life and work of Les' Kurbas, the revolutionary Ukrainian director killed in Stalin's purges. Two weeks into their trip, Mikhail Gorbachev is kidnapped, the Kremlin is overtaken by a military coup, and the Soviet Union is plunged into volatile uncertainty.
